knit/lab/sari

A large exotic stole inspired by colorful Indian embroideries and filigree patterns.

The pattern can be knit in any colors you choose. I paired bright rainbow colors with darker earthy colors, however you can also opt for a more muted palette. I used a gradient for the MC and a progression of bright colors for the main CC - you could also use plain shades for the MC and main CC, and introduce highlights of color in the intarsia diamonds and the intarsia stripe. For yarn suggestions, please see the Yarn Ideas page for Sari on Ravelry.

Sari main pattern

See below for details of the yarn used for the original sample.

Total MC is 1280yds/1168m, main CC and small intarsia diamonds 640yds/584m, and the intarsia stripe approx. 100 yds/90m

Knit on 2.75mm/US2 needles

Gauge: approximately 25sts and 28 rows = 4 inches/10cm in stranded pattern

Dimensions after blocking: 72in/180cm long x 25in/64cm

Techniques include back and forth stranding, intarsia and lace knitting on RS and WS rows, with 3 or 4 colors in each row.

The main chart is quite wide and is divided over two landscape pages.

The pdf includes charts, short written instructions and notes, and a photo tutorial on splicing yarn ends.

Sari variations

The pdf also includes three variations of the pattern, which each require only half quantities of the MC.

I have created a separate web page with details and images of the variations.

Sari is also available as part of the Seven Colorwork Adventures eBook.

The left hand side of the image above shows some changes that were made before deciding on the final version

of the chart. The pdf includes an extra chart with an alternative stranded pattern.

The original shawl was knit with ColorShift Yarn sets (unfortunately now discontinued - see help page for details).

For those who are interested, the MC is a combination of two sets - Copper to Burgundy and Copper to Koi,

a total of 16 shades; each set is 640yds/584m, so the total MC is 1280yds/1168m.

The main CC and small intarsia diamonds use one set of the warm Parade Progression, 8 shades, 640yds/584m

The intarsia stripe uses the cool Parade Progression, approximately 100 yds/90m
