knit/lab/carpet

Diagonals of contrast colors traverse a repeating MC motif in a colorful rectangle inspired by hand woven carpets.

The color distribution is inspired by abrash, the natural and random changes in color that occur in antique rugs

due to variations in the dyeing process and other factors.

The shawl is knit on 3.25mm/US3 needles with approximately 200g/840m/920yds of Jamieson Spindrift.

The MC shifts up and down through a gradation of scarlet to maroon.

The CC diagonal shades are informally grouped into 4 themes:

pinks/pale pinks/ivory;  yellow/orange/red/pink;  purples/blues/turquoise/grays;  green/turquoise/aqua/light blue

The diagonals are worked as gradations with the occasional unexpected jump in tone.

Finished dimensions: approximately 21ins/54cm by 61ins/155cm

Gauge: approximately 21 stitches and 21 rows = 4in/10cm in stranded intarsia pattern

An interesting knit - techniques include lace knitting, stranding, intarsia & trapping, with up to 6 colors in each row.

The pattern is easily customisable - you can mix up the charts to create your own carpet.

The pdf includes a large chart for the intarsia diagonals, 4 smaller charts for the stranded and corrugated ribbing bands, short written instructions and notes, and a photo tutorial on splicing yarn ends.

Note: the pdf does not include color distribution or specific intarsia lengths.

Carpet is also available as part of the knit/lab Originals volume 2 eBook.
