knit/lab/jaali crescent

A multicolored crescent inspired by the light, shade & transparency of Islamic architecture.

The project is worked mostly on 3.25mm/US3 needles.

4mm/US6 needles are used for the last two rows, and 5mm/US8 for the bind off.

Dimensions: approximately 180cm/71ins x 70cm/27.5ins

Gauge: approximately 20 stitches & 26 rows = 4ins/10cm in stocking stitch

Techniques: intarsia, stranding, ribbing, lace stitches including p2togtbl

MC: approximately 875yds/800m; I used two balls of Zauberball 100, Licht Im Schacht 2264.

Other colorways, a plain yarn, or a combination of different yarns of a similar weight will do as well.

CC: lots of scraps of plain colors and variegated yarns for intarsia, ranging from approximately 1 - 4m / 1 - 4.5yds. Shorter lengths of similar shades can be spliced together.

I used the same simple colorwork motif throughout the pattern to emphasize the play of colors.

Blank charts are provided and can be used if you'd like to create your own colorwork motifs, lace stitches or textures. There are also instructions for an alternative border with a beaded zigzag.

This pattern was originally published in five instalments as knit/lab Mystery KAL 8 in April & May 2021.
