knit/lab/august

A vibrant scarf or shawl pattern inspired by patches of lustrous saturated color in the paintings of German artist August Macke.

Bands of intarsia are twisted into zigzags by simple lace stitches - the dabs of color (each requiring less than 2m/2yds of yarn) are squished and rotated into irregular shapes by the increases and decreases.

Many of the yarn lengths are composed of even shorter lengths of related colors spliced together like quickly mixed paint - the more color changes, the more lively your "painting" will be!

Knit on 3.5mm/US4 needles with approximately 100g/460yds/420m of Jamieson’s Spindrift in lots of bright colors plus some lights and darks

Dimensions: approximately 14ins/36cm wide, by 51ins/130cm

Gauge: approximately 27sts and 20 rows = 4ins/10cm

in intarsia zigzag pattern

The pdf contains a chart, notes, instructions and a splicing phototutorial.

Skills required: intarsia, increasing & decreasing, simple lace stitches, splicing.

It's not a complex pattern - the "work" involves making color choices and weaving in ends.
